Rays pick up $20M option on ace pitcher Drew Rasmussen
The Tampa Bay Rays have decided to exercise their $20 million option on pitcher Drew Rasmussen, opting for this over a $500,000 buyout. This decision secures Rasmussen's contract through 2027, following a successful 2026 season where he remained healthy and made at least 28 starts.
Rasmussen, who is 31 years old, played a crucial role in the Rays' success, achieving a 16-5 record with a 2.67 ERA during the regular season and contributing to their AL East title. He also performed well in the postseason, with a 2-1 record and a 2.20 ERA in five starts. Despite a tough loss in Game 5 of the World Series, where he pitched four innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, his overall performance solidified his value to the team. The Rays also opted not to pursue mutual options for pitcher Nick Martinez and outfielder Cedric Mullins.
