Padres decline options on Pivetta, Giolito, Canning; exercise option on Hart
The San Diego Padres have made significant roster decisions by declining options on pitchers Nick Pivetta, Lucas Giolito, and Griffin Canning, while opting to retain left-hander Kyle Hart. Pivetta's $14 million option for 2027 was rejected, making him a free agent after two seasons with the team. His recent season was marred by injury, limiting his appearances after April due to elbow issues.
Giolito and Canning also saw their options declined, with Giolito receiving a buyout after a season affected by his own elbow problems. Canning, who returned from Achilles surgery, similarly faced challenges this season. In contrast, Kyle Hart's option was exercised, ensuring his continued presence in the bullpen. Additionally, infielder Miguel Andujar opted out of his contract, while Wandy Peralta chose to exercise his option, and Yuki Matsui maintained his contract with the team.
