Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson given one-place grid penalty at Mexico City Grand Prix
Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson have received one-place grid penalties for their collision during Friday practice at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The incident occurred as Verstappen attempted to overtake Lawson on the inside of Turn 12, leading to a series of wheel-to-wheel exchanges that culminated in contact after Verstappen went off track and rejoined the race.
Both drivers were summoned by the stewards and found equally at fault for their actions, which were deemed unacceptable given prior warnings. They acknowledged that their maneuvers were unnecessary and clumsy. The penalties mean that both will drop one position from their qualifying spots for the race on Sunday. Lawson, who has been standing in for Verstappen's teammate, is currently uncertain about his future with the team, a situation Verstappen alluded to after the practice session.
