Guardians' Clase, Ortiz described as 'cheaters' at pitch-rigging trial

During the opening statements of a federal trial, defense attorneys characterized a key witness as a deceptive individual who exploited Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. The prosecutors accused both players of cheating, claiming that Clase rigged at least 18 pitches across 17 games between May 2023 and May 2025, while Ortiz allegedly manipulated two pitches in June 2025. They face serious charges including conspiracy, sports bribery, and money laundering.

Clase's defense highlighted his successful career and questioned the motive behind the alleged actions, suggesting that the witness, Enoc Pena, misrepresented his relationship with Clase for personal gain. Ortiz's legal team also focused on Pena's role, arguing that he was a central figure in the alleged conspiracy. Testimony from Major League Baseball officials indicated that communicating about pitch strategies with bettors would violate player contracts. The trial continues with further testimony expected.
