Fifa Laopakdee wins Asia-Pacific Amateur, earns Masters, Open Championship bids
Fifa Laopakdee from Thailand secured his second consecutive Asia-Pacific Amateur title with a strong performance on Sunday, finishing three shots ahead of his competitors. He achieved this victory with a final round of 1-under 70, which guarantees him a spot in both the Masters at Augusta National and the Open Championship at St. Andrews next summer.
Laopakdee, who began the final round three shots behind, made a pivotal move on the 11th hole, turning a two-shot deficit into a two-shot lead after his birdie coincided with a triple bogey from New Zealand's Zack Swanwick. Despite Swanwick starting the day with a lead, he struggled with his game, ultimately finishing with a 75. Laopakdee's win places him alongside Hideki Matsuyama as one of only two players to win back-to-back titles since the tournament's inception in 2009.
