BYU sophomore Akina, 20, fires 64 to grab share of Mexico Open lead
Kihei Akina, a sophomore from Brigham Young University, shot a remarkable 7-under 64 to share the lead at the Mexico Open. This performance marks his ninth round of 67 or lower in his last four tournaments, showcasing his growing confidence on the PGA Tour. Akina's score of 11-under 131 puts him in a tie with Matthieu Pavon and Adrien Dumont de Chassart, with many competitors still to complete their rounds.
Akina's game included three birdies on par 5s and an eagle on the par-4 13th, where he drove the green from nearly 300 yards. His recent travel schedule, moving from Bermuda to Mexico, has not hindered his performance, as he views each tournament as a valuable learning experience. Originally from Hawaii, Akina has made significant strides in his amateur ranking and is currently ninth in the world, bolstered by his recent college tournament finishes.
